Agriculture Diversification and Vulnerability of Climate Change for Livelihoods in North-Western Himalayas
The Department of Economics of Akal College of Economics, Commerce and Management, Eternal University, Baru Sahib and Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion (HPCDP-JICA-ODA) Project, Hamirpur jointly organized two days seminar sponsored by ICSSR, North-West Regional Centre, Chandigarh on Agriculture Diversification and Vulnerability of Climate Change for Sustainable Food Security and Livelihoods in North-Western Himalayas on 25-26th March, 2019. In all, 13 research papers and 2 progressive farmers’ success stories were presented and thoroughly discussed during different technical sessions. During the seminar three local progressive farmers namely, Sh. Nagender Thakur, Surinder Singh and Vimal were honoured for their contribution in the diversification of agriculture (see photos). The seminar was focused mainly on diversification of crops with high nutritional values; the impact of different levels of crop diversification on cropping pattern, income and employment generation; the current status of agriculture diversification and problems and prospects of crop diversification in horticulture farming of H.P. The policy implications included urgent need to address nutritional security along with food security, the conservation of biodiversity, practicing agriculture diversification with high value vegetable crops, allocation of public funds towards agricultural marketing infrastructure & promotion of small and medium level enterprises, area specific suitable water application techniques & conservation of resources and authentication of area under horticulture crops in the context of climate change.
