B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology

The B.Sc. (Hons. with Research) Microbiology programme is designed to make the learners knowledgeable about the various basic concepts of microbiology, their applications and impact on human health and environment. The undergraduate programme focuses on inculcating scientific and research skills with respect to the role of microbiologists in industries, medicine, agriculture and environmental studies. Specific skill-based training is included in the curriculum for students to identify industrial processes with a specific role of microbiologists in quality control, industrial production, and academic research.

The courses included in the program offer a blend of theoretical and experimental aspects in interdisciplinary areas of microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, environmental science, IPRs, bioethics, biostatistics, enzymology, molecular biology, and recombinant DNA technology. Moreover, the program contributes to research and innovation within the field of microbiology. Through research projects, publications, and innovative interventions, graduates advance scientific knowledge and inform best practices. Program Structure:

B.Sc. (Hons. with Research) Microbiology is a four-year program consisting of eight semesters with multiple entry and exit options, as per the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020). The program will include the following components:

  • Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Courses
  • General Elective (GE) Courses
  • Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC)
  • Value Added Courses (VAC)
  • Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC)
  • Internship / Apprentice / Project / Community Outreach (IAPC)

The course has been designed as per the National Education Policy guidelines and offers options to exit with:

  • Certificate in Microbiology after 1 year
  • Diploma in Microbiology after 2 years
  • Three-year Honors Degree in Microbiology
  • Four-year Honors Degree with Research in Microbiology
