Ph.D. Entomology

Brief history and profile of Department:

An Entomology department established in 2018-19. The major focus of this department is on the study of insects, encompassing various aspects like morphology, taxonomy, ecology, and their impact on agriculture and public health. Entomology departments offer courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including specialized areas like biological control and molecular entomology. In undergraduate and post graduate programs specific courses to the study insect morphology, taxonomy and classification are offered to understand insect diversity and their relationships. Special emphasis is given to the research includes studying insect interactions with their environment, including pollinators and their conservation. A primary focus is on minimizing crop losses due to insect pests, developing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) modules and conducting research on eco-friendly pest control methods. It aims to enhance knowledge, develop pest management strategies and conduct research in areas like biological control and molecular entomology.

The department revolves around a comprehensive and sustainable approach of pest management, research and education. Key to the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which combines cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical control methods for effectively manage pest populations while minimizing the pesticide pressure on the environment. Monitoring and early detection are crucial components of IPM, allowing for timely intervention to prevent pest outbreaks. Encouraging the use of biological control agents such as predators, parasitoids, and beneficial microorganisms, alongside judicious use of selective pesticides, reduces reliance on harmful chemicals and promotes long-term sustainability.

Major Initiatives of Department

The best practices of the department revolve around a comprehensive and sustainable approach to pest management, research and education. Major initiatives often involve developing integrated pest management strategies, investigating the role of beneficial insects and conducting research on insect biology, behaviour and effect of bio-pesticides etc.

  • The very first initiative taken was collection and Identification of insects for study and reference. Collection and analysis of insect population data help to understand trends and patterns in the season.
  • Focus on the judicious use of pesticide in IPM strategy with major emphasis on bio-pesticides and cultural practices to reduce the need for synthetic pesticides, and enhance the bio-control agents in agro-ecosystem to get sustainable impact.
  • Management of honey bees to learn their role in crop pollination as well as harvesting of other apiary products like honey, bee wax, pollen grains etc.
  • Involvement of faculty members and students with the local communities, to aware them about the sustainable pest control strategies and conservation of natural enemies of pests.
