The Department of Punjabi is a part of the Akal College of Arts and Social Sciences (ACASS). The primary aim of this department is to provide advanced knowledge of Punjabi, the mother tongue of the majority of students, and to inculcate a cultural and creative awareness amongst these students. The department focuses, moreover on creating a strong emotional intelligence through the mediums of language and literature, so that students can better integrate as part of an ideal society. The department provides lectures and seminars to different streams, including Humanities, Music, Psychology and Science students at the undergraduate level. The department has also been granted permission to teach up to MA Honors students in Punjabi and Ph.D. Punjabi. The faculty members of this department are all UGC accredited and have passed their NET exams and are experienced in teaching and research in their specific fields of interest (e.g. literature, linguistics, folk culture and folklore, etc.). The department also organizes various activities and exercises to boost the students’ confidence and increase their knowledge and cultural awareness. These activities include poetry writing and recitation, declamation, and quiz contests.
