M.Sc. Zoology

About the Programme

The Department of Zoology offers two comprehensive postgraduate programs designed to cater to students aiming to advance their academic and research careers in the field of animal sciences. These programs include Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Zoology and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Zoology.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Zoology

The M.Sc. Zoology program is structured to deliver a thorough understanding of various branches of zoology, including Animal physiology, Molecular biology, Parasitology, Ecology, Evolution, Genetics, Entomology and Developmental biology. The program combines theoretical instruction with hands-on laboratory work, field studies, and research activities to build a strong foundation in both classical and modern zoological sciences.

To cater to the diverse academic interests and career goals of students, the program offers two options in the final phase:

  • M.Sc. Zoology with Dissertation: Students opting for this track engage in independent research under the supervision of a faculty member. They are required to complete and submit a research thesis in the fourth semester. This track is ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in research, academia, and Ph.D. programs in zoology and related life sciences.
  • M.Sc. Zoology without Dissertation: Students who choose this option will study three additional theory subjects during the fourth semester along with a project work component. This path is suitable for those aiming to gain a broader understanding of zoological subjects and prepare for careers in education, industry, or public service.

Both options are designed to ensure that students graduate with a robust knowledge base, critical thinking abilities, and practical skills relevant to their future pursuits.

The Department of Zoology conducts research in key areas such as sustainable biodiversity management, eco-friendly pest control, cytogenetics, and taxonomy. Major research thrusts include the use of entomopathogenic nematodes, microbes, and nanoparticles (ZnO₂, TiO₂) for biological pest control, as well as bionomic studies of insect pests to reduce chemical pesticide use. The department also investigates the genotoxic effects of nanoparticles through cytogenetic assessment, contributing to biosafety in agriculture and medicine. Research on biodiversity includes taxonomic and ecological documentation of fish fauna and insect species, along with studies on plant parasitic nematodes and their sustainable management. These diverse research initiatives reflect the department’s commitment to advancing knowledge in zoological sciences with real-world applications. The dissertations completed or currently being pursued by M.Sc. Zoology students are as follows:
