Community Outreach Programme at Parada

On 11th November, 2024 a group of 30 students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Ag 3rd Sem and one student of M.Sc. Ag. Agricultural Economics was taken by Dr S. K Chauhan to organize community outreach program with the assistance of innovative and progressive Agri-preneur Mr. Arjun Attri of village Parada located at about 22 km from Baru Sahib. The students held interaction with the farmer and collected information on socio economic aspects. The students shared their theoretical knowledge and learned about beekeeping with indigenous honeybees, structure of apiary house, dairy farming with sahiwal cows. Nursery raised under protected and open environment of fruits (apple, walnut persimmon, peach, plum, etc.) was shown to the students. Agro- horti model with high density plantation of apple and cultivation of garlic beneath the apple plants performed with high-tech techniques were unique examples for the students. Model of water harvesting management through delivery pipes from tanks and gravity system was explained by the progressive farmer in detail. The entire village was found having a perennial source of spring water from top head of the village having 40 households.

 

The farmer organized a trip to playhouses in different locations where students could notice the walnut nurseries and upgraded their knowledge through interaction. Among fruit nurseries and plants; the students could physically see well managed growth of apricot, walnut, kiwi, persimmon and apple plants. The students also learned that the farmer has signed MOU with Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry for the sale of all fruit nurseries with 20% commission on the sale value to the UHF, Solan, except for apple plantations. The farmer explained in detail the practices followed by him to make optimum use of resources and to get remunerative price for his vegetables and fruit nurseries. In nutshell the students learned that how a farmer using modern agriculture technology can become a successful entrepreneur and may earn handsome amount of nearly Rs. 20 lakh per annum through the model of integrated faming. His future plan is to raise separate kiwi orchard under the newly developed land.
