Brief Discription: The Department of Mathematics celebrated Women in Mathematics Day to honor the remarkable contributions of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal. The event was attended by all faculty members of the department: Dr. Surjan Singh, Dr. Shivani, Dr. Bharti Thakur, and Ms. Harpreet Kaur, along with Dr. Anil Kumar.
The event began with a welcome address by Ms. Manpreet Kaur, a research scholar from the Department of Mathematics. She warmly welcomed Dr. T. S. Banipal, Dean of Academic Affairs, all the faculty members, and students.
Following the welcome, students from the department delivered a series of insightful and inspiring presentations celebrating the achievements of women in mathematics: Ms. Kanwalpreet Kaur, research scholar, presented on The Contributions of Women in Mathematics.
Ms. Manpreet Kaur delivered a presentation titled Women Mathematicians Who Changed the World.
Ms. Kalpana Kapoor spoke on Emmy Noether: The Mother of Modern Algebra.
Ms. Mehak gave an engaging talk on Dr. Neena Gupta: A Trailblazing Mathematician.
Ms. Akriti Guleria presented on Dr. Parimala Raman.
Ms. Preetika shared insights on Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer.
Additionally, students provided valuable information on government fellowships and scholarships aimed at supporting women in science and mathematics.
An open quiz competition was also organized, comprising two interactive rounds:
Round One: Featured general questions based on mathematical facts and concepts.
Round Two: Titled Let’s Recognize the Faces, focused on identifying renowned women mathematicians through pictures and clues.
The event concluded with a motivational address by Dr. Surjan Singh, who appreciated the students' efforts and encouraged everyone to continue promoting women's contributions in STEM fields.
Finally, Ms. Manpreet Kaur delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all faculty members, participants, and students for their presence and support in making the event successful.
